Prometheus by Panayoti Karousos Prometheus opera is the first part of Karousos Hellenic Trilogy (Prometheus – The Olympic Flame – Alexander the Great). This first work based on Aeschylus tragedy Prometheus bound, is a flash back to the most ancient myths of the Greek Mythology, were goes directly to the origins of the human civilization in order to show the roots of the human spirit in the way to civilized. The work relates that the planets, the galaxies and the forces of the universe are the Gods were human creates personified after himself to get his power. Prometheus rebels and bring to mankind the Fire of Knowledge. For this act he gets Zeus punishment and remains bound at the Mount Caucasus. The knowledge as privilege of the gods were they afraid that with this Fire mankind will became God too. Is the similar story of the Bible in the Greek Mythology version. Here Titan Prometheus is not the Lucifer devil that brought the human creation to hell with him bad a benefactor that elevates humans and gave them hope. At the end of the opera the composer brings to the stage Zeus to curse Prometheus for his act and to send Goddess Athena in the middle of the storm and earthquake to punish Prometheus. The musical texture of the opera Prometheus developed by dark motives were we found in all the Tetralogy. The critics categorize the opera as a modern post-romantic work with rare exaltation of lyricism. The simplicity of the rhythms covers an harmonic complexity, a mixture were the philosophical and high poetical libretto combined. The opera Prometheus debuted the career of Panayoti Karousos presented in Place des Arts, Montreal Canada two seasons 1994 in Modern Greek and 1996 in the French translation of professor Jacques Bouchard (director of Neo-Hellenic Studies in the UDM & McGill University) with costumes and setting. Ocean and Zeus was the former partner of Maria Callas Canadian bass Joseph Rouleau, at the role of Via (Violance) the Scala di Milano mezzo Annamaria Popescu and the fine casting was completed among others with renowned pianist of the Opera de Montreal Mme Claudette Denys. The opera represented in English in Los Angeles with soloists from the Los Angeles opera and in New York with the Astoria Symphony and soloists from the New York opera with maestro Grant Gilman always acclaimed for a melodic and harmonic power. Prometheus presented in Washington DC with the District of Columbia Symphony orchestra and soloists with maestro Grant Gilman in 2008. In Greece Prometheus presented in many Ancient theaters as the famous Epidaurus, Ancient Messina, in the Archeological Site of Acropolis, in the National Archeological Museum of Greece and many more with a great success. In March 2014 the opera was presented at the United Nations Manhattan under the Auspices of UNESCO, and in New York with the great Greek bass Vasilis Asimakopoulos in the leading role. Prometheus Bound is the first Greek opera in history that presented a hundreds of times continuously, establishing Greece in the international operatic stage.
